About the Speak Out Idaho Project
Since 1993, Speak Out Idaho has been educating Idahoans to respect and understand gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. Starting with a speakers bureau focusing on educating allies and our own community about the 1994 anti-gay Proposition One (which Idaho stunned the nation by defeating at the polls with a 300 vote margin)
and continuing today with legislator education days, skills work shops on working with the media, volunteers, and gaining community organizing and political skills. We have also conducted and sponsored workshops on fundraising, public speaking, and many issue focused sessions on Idaho's "Infamous crimes Against Nature" law, employment discrimination, safe schools efforts, hate crimes and more.
YFFN's Speak Out Project also partners with Western States Center in Portland, The Idaho Women's Network and United Vision for Idaho in dismantling oppression workshops that deal with confronting the racism, sexism, homophobia and other oppression we learn and internalize growing up in a culture that grants many privilege based on race, class, gender, gender identity and sexual orientation.
